This evening I managed to finish off one of three projected appendices for the new book. Right now I only have three new chapters to finish off -- one pretty much done -- and the bulk of the work on the book is finished.
I still have to look over and do a final edit on almost a dozen tech edited chapters, but experience has shown that I can likely tackle most of what's remaining in the course of a weekend. (Am told the tech reviewer is currently swamped with other commitments, so I can’t expect any tech reviewed chapters for a little while). Then there's the two additional appendices, but that is largely a compilation job, taking and properly organizing material and summarizing it. That's probably another solid weekend, but that work has already been started too.
Then it is up to Dave T. who is laying out the final, printable text, and my editor, who wants to get the book to the publisher's prior to Xmas.
The other big job left to do with the book is to work on the supporting Web site, which essentially replaces the CD-ROM contained in the previous edition. But that only needs to be ready by the time the book goes to press. My plan is to make it a site that will be useful not only to readers of the book, but to anybody looking for a quick reference for browser compatibility. Developments on it will likely become source material for a 3rd edition.
But this weekend I vow not to work on the book.
I wonder if a new cover design is in the works. I see that listing for the new title are already appearing on the Web (heck, it's already being discounted. ;-)
