Fiery Tempanyaki
Erika starts work on a biography/documentary tomorrow (on the Challenger Disaster, on behalf of the National Geographic Society) so I decided to treat everybody out to a dinner out. And also just for a change of pace.

Picked up Vanessa from Art Garage directly after work, and we made our way to the sushi place nearest to where we live, Akena-ya, where we met Erika and Annie. I chose a seat at the Tepanyaki tables as a treat for the kids.

The chef did not disappoint, putting on a good show for the girls, cracking open a spinning egg in the air with his knife, much chopping of fish and juggling pepper shakers, and setting a small onion castle aflame with brandy (which scared Annie). A fun show for the kids and a tasty meal as well.

I have to say that I envy my kids the experiences they are getting at such a young age -- am pretty sure I was in my early 20s before I had my first Tepanyaki meal. It's a small deal ultimately, but it is part of the reason why we live in the city instead of the country: the chance to expose our kids to the widest amount of cultural experiences, no matter how seemingly minor, all within easy reach.
