Another Beatle Soon to Pass Away
Just heard the news on CBC via RealAudio, that ex-Beatle George Harrison's cancer is terminal, and he is expecting to die soon. Truly sad news.

There was a time when I went through a George Harrison "phase", which was sparked off by buying a used copy of All Things Must Pass when I was a teenager. I ended up buying most of his later solo efforts as well -- and being largely disappointed with the rest of them (especially the Dark Horse album, blech). This eventually cured me of this phase.

My Beatle story: my father and Aunt Edith grew up in Liverpool. Both ended up leaving the city before The Beatles hit the height of their popularity, but my father visited the famous underground Cavern (prior to the times The Beatles played their famous early gigs there), and my Aunt Edith worked at the instrument store that was in competition with the store run by Brian Epstein, who was to become The Beatles manager. She apparently sold guitars to some of the members of The Beatles in their formative days. Will have to ask her more about those times someday... Somewhere in my mother's possession is a small open-reel tape my cousin Howard had sent along to my parents in the early 60s that contains an early recording of The Beatles from a 45, as good account as any of the early days of Beatlemania.
