A fun day. Erika bought tickets so that I could take Vanessa to see a performance of Peter and the Wolf by the Toronto Symphony Orchestra at Roy Thompson Hall. This was the first time Vanessa’s been to RTH, or seen a symphony orchestra, so it was a real treat.
That day we had lunch at Licks prior to heading to RTH. She had picked out a pretty blouse for herself in preparation for the event. After the lunch we bought ice cream, and Vanessa wanted chocolate ice cream in a cone. Mistake! We had to head home and change her into something unstained with chocolate, and then dashed over in a taxi. ;-)
The performance itself was fun. They had a couple of mimes take part in the performance, which went over very well with the kids. Select members of the TSO played the part of the bird, duck, cat, and the trio of hesitant hunters while the two mimes played the parts of Peter and the Wolf. It was well done, and the kids all had a good time as the cat chased the birds, the Wolf appeared and disappeared on different balconies within the Hall. Vanessa knew the story already, though she needed a little bit of narrative help every now and then.
I meant to go and pick up a copy of Peter and the Wolf on CD after the show, but the line-ups at the shop were too long for me. So we went outside, and spent about a ˝ hour at the local park and pond, with Vanessa’s sleeves getting progressively more wet as she played with leaves in the pond, and with the throngs of other kids doing the same.
In no rush to head back, we headed off to the R.O.M. “to see dinosaurs”. Spent much of our time there at the Kids “Discovery” section across from the dinosaur exhibit, which I notice they have completed (or is at least more complete than last time we visited). Vanessa also enjoyed the exhibit of women’s dresses made up entirely of paper. I went in to see the Art of Wine exhibit, but this didn’t interest Vanessa in the slightest so we didn’t stay there long (which was a shame for me, as there was plenty to interest me). It was amusing to notice the display case containing vintage plonk made by Jordan’s winery – pretty much guaranteed this would be the only place that stuff would ever be elevated to status in a museum.
When we visited the ROM Shop, I told Vanessa that she could have a “pretty rock” to add to her collection. So she picks out a rough gemstone collection in a small box as her choice! Boy, I got suckered but good, but fair’s fair, so we bought it (since I didn’t get the Peter and the Wolf CD, I figured it was a good trade-off).
We were at the ROM near to their closing time, and there were teams of people setting up chapel in the atrium adjacent to the venerable Timothy Eaton statue, and a reception area for well over a hundred dinner guests in the general atrium on the main floor. Quite the place for a wedding! (Wish I had been invited, the wine selection looked good! ;-)
