Our Trees Are Falling Down
Right after I finished my conversation on the phone with Pierre last night, I heard a strong gust of wind, followed by a deep "ka-thunk", felt more than heard. Last week during a similar wind-storm during the day a sizable branch either from either our tree or from an adjoining tree blew down, falling in the middle of the street, with its uppermost branches falling harmless on a truck across from our house. Within an hour or so city works had it all chopped up and carted away. Am not even sure if the person who parked their truck there for the day was ever aware that part of a tree had even fallen on top of it.

Anyways, as it turns out, last night an even bigger chunk from a tree two houses down from us had fallen last night. It was a branch, but a big one, reaching (now) from the ground to the top of the house it had partially fallen on. Power lines had been knocked down and the house itself undoubtedly got rattled, but I could see no actual damage thankfully. This morning while I was leaving for work the power lines had been tidied up, though the large tree branch was still there, and I suspect they'll finish off the job in daylight.

When we moved in to our house a couple of years ago, I remember thinking that the lovely old maple trees lining the street are likely getting a bit long in the tooth. Our house was built in the 19teens, as were most others on the street, and the trees were most likely planted at the same time. So, at some point the old maple in front of our house is bound to come down during our time at the house. Time perhaps to look into fast-growing trees to replace it...
