Thursday – Winter-Wonderland
Today, we got dumped-on, snow-wise. I typically work at home on Thursdays as well, so I didn’t have to battle my way into the office in Oakville. So in the morning, I sat back, drank my daily cup of tea, and enjoyed the view of the winter-wonderland from the kitchen.

The twin young girls from next door had the day off from school due to the weather, and after shoveling snow (with enthusiastic if not terribly efficient help from Vanessa ;-) ended up spending the better part of the day at our place, in turns shoveling snow, drinking hot chocolate, playing games with Vanessa and watching “Cinderella”.

Thursdays is when Vanessa and I head out to her swimming class. By that time the roads were largely cleared and we didn’t have any trouble getting there. After her lesson and the usual dinner she now likes to have at the rec centre’s snack bar, we trekked over to the ice rink next door, and she got her first dose of a live hockey game, played by guys my age (or maybe a bit younger. ;-) There was lots of action in the 10 or so minutes of the game we stayed for, and she seemed to really enjoy it. She is still learning her numbers, and she had lots of questions regarding the numbers on the player’s backs and what they stood for (“is [the guy wearing] 6 better than [the guy wearing] 4?”). The occasional bodycheck made her wonder if this was a game of good-guys vs bad-guys, for which I didn’t have a clear answer. ;-)

On the way home, Vanessa made a point of sliding down every little mound of snow by the side of the road. She was exhausted but happy by her bedtime.

Wednesday – Vanessa Turns 4
Today, Vanessa turned 4 years old. Her real party is set for Saturday, but we managed to squeeze a number of fun things in for her today.

Luckily I was schedled to work at home today, so I was able to wish her a happy birthday in person when she got up in the morning. She and Erika had fun decorating some cup-cakes that she took to her pre-school in the afternoon. There was a special lunch for her at G-Ma Jean’s, and I bought her an ice-cream birthday cake from the local Baskins-Robins as desert. Jean presented her with a second hand-made nightgown, which went down very well (Vanessa has hardly slept in her jammies since getting her first nightgown from Jean this past Xmas).

Her G-Pa Josef also put in a call to wish her a happy birthday from somewhere in France, but unfortunately he just missed her by a few minutes, having just left for her lunch. I told him to try again on Saturday of possible, when the big party happens for her.

After dinner, she opened up the two presents she got from her Great-Aunts and –Uncles from Britain: a set of stickers and a colourful sweater. Both went down extremely well, and I’ll be sending off pictures of the package openings to my relatives as thank yous.

That evening was kind of rough, as Annie has been teething again. She’s already – at just shy of 6 months – got her two lower front teeth in, but obviously more are coming in. Erika went out for her evening Yoga class, and Annie didn’t stop crying until her Mom got back a couple of hours later. I was completely frazzled by that point, and despite all of my efforts to cheer her up, once her Mom was back, all was well. ;-)
