Swimmin’ with Nick the Cat
Today I spent some time getting the new Internet Network switch set up. Thanks more to some tricks I know than to the meager documentation provided with the unit, I was able to give Erika's machine Internet access within a few minutes, and was able to network two of my three computer systems -- it seems as though the network card on the third machine has up and died on me. Thankfully I've got a spare network card or two to try out on that machine at a later date.

Today was the day I had arranged with my Aunt Jane to pick up her cat for "cat sitting" at our place for the next couple of weeks while she heads out to Seattle for a vacation visiting her relatives out there. I had previously promised Vanessa with a "make-up" swim, as the flying skylight incident on Thursday kept us from our regular excursion to the Birchmount pool, and since Jane's apartment complex has a sizable indoor pool...

Vanessa and I had a good time at the pool. It took Vanessa a little while to get used to it, as the shallowest it gets is up to her chin height if she stands on her tippie-toes. I hovered around her the whole time making sure she was safe, and as she gained more confidence over time, got more daring and near the end, was almost-kinda-sortof swimming, while making sure she never went too deep. Without my glasses on I couldn't make out the clock on the wall outside of the pool, and we ended up spending a good hour and a half or so in the pool. We were lucky in that we had the pool wholly to ourselves the whole time we were there. Afterwards I managed to gingerly snag ol' Nick the Cat and put him into his travel box. An exhausted Vanessa fell fast asleep in the taxi on the ride home.

I had planned on finishing off my monthly Web Weaving article for The Computer Paper, but I had completely forgotten about the concert Erika's band was to play that night. So after dinner I ended up entertaining both kids until their respective bedtimes -- and mine followed shortly thereafter... ;-)
