Big "V" Prep Day
Worked at home today, thanks to my doctor's appointment in the afternoon. Worked primarily on newsletters, updating aspects of the Internal DV site and formatting an announcement from the CEO -- a pretty typical Monday all-in-all.

Went to see Dr. Singal, a Urologist, in the afternoon at East General hospital. He will be doing my vasectomy. He is very cheery and efficient -- my appointment couldn't have been more than 5 minutes in length. He did a quick check to see if everything was where it out to be -- it is -- and explained the procedure. Read on only if you want to know: it's all done under a local anesthetic, the needle insert between the penis and scrotum. He then proceeds to locate the seminal tubes leading to the penis, cuts them, cauterizes them, then ties off the ends. The procedure is quick: I and two other guys are slated to be "fixed" within the same hour. After the operation, I am "officially" considered fertile until a semen test is done 10 weeks afterwards that ensures that everything has gone okay. I can expect some swelling and the doctor recommended that I use an ice pack afterwards (what, down there?!? ;-)

I realize that this may sound all too clinical, but believe me, I can all too easily visualize things enough to make me feel a bit queasy about it (and this Web site graphically shows what happens. Definitely not for the squeamish). Still, I am determined to go through with things. It'll be great not to have to desperately grab for a condom anymore while having sex. I'd be a liar if I didn't say that I would have liked a boy as well, but long ago we agreed to have two kids, and there's no guarantee that a third child would be a boy -- that same 50/50 coin toss happens every time a woman conceives. And I'm very happy to have two delightful little girls, so I really have no regrets going into this.
