Writing Weekend
That's what this past long-weekend was for me, a writing weekend, spent solely on Core CSS, 2nd Edition. Erika and the kids headed to Deloro and I hunkered down to write, write, write. Got a lot accomplished -- about 100 pages or so of new and revised material, though in this case that only equates to 3 completed chapters (plus another 3 chapters merging edits from the technical and copy editors). Was hoping to have more fresh chapters done, but am confident that everything I'll be submitting today is solid work.

I retained a tradition started in the last book: putting a baby picture in one of the example sections. Last time it was Vanessa, this time it was Annie's turn. She is depicted in the section on backgrounds on the floor of the living room with a cheery big smile, holding onto a purple Licks balloon.

This time around I am very glad I know a lot more about using PhotoShop. The CSS3 sections virtually demand mock-ups, all of which I have to make myself. A few tricks I picked up recently about using layers efficiently did me in good stead. Piecing together the meanings of specific properties of the CSS3 specification is a rewarding process, with lots of "ah-hahs" along the way. There's a certain child-like glee at discovering a new technical "toy" to play with, or will play with down the road.

The best part of the weekend was undoubtedly being reunited with Erika and the kids when they returned Monday at noon.
