This seems to be a bad week for doing anything computer-wise. While trying to burn a CD-R using Roxio on my main work system, it locked up the system tight. The usual three-finger salute did nada, so there was really nothing for it but for me to physically switch off the system. I mentally crossed my fingers while doing this.
I need not have bothered. My Windows XP Profile had been corrupted, meaning that my computer didn’t know me -- or more importantly, my settings -- any more. Ugh. I've already been through this hassle once before, and I am beginning to be less and less impressed with XP. Certainly it doesn’t crash like this too often, but when it does, it seems like I have to completely rebuild my desktop and all of my settings. The process this time took a couple of hours, and when I managed to get back up to speed with work, I found I had to spend more time fixing other things that crept up on the fly.
At lunchtime I went to The Computer Paper offices as I was told there were plenty of fresh titles waiting for me. It was somewhat ironic to find a copy of the new "Windows XP Annoyances amidst the boxes...
I made a point of deleting Roxio from my system. It seems a lot less reliable than CD Creator (I’ve loss more than a fair share of blank CD-Rs to Roxio, and none to a second, much slower machine running CD Creator). This seems to be a common opinion.
