$26.99 for a CD? Are they Nuts?
Okay, back to more mundane topics and peeves...

On the way back from work today I decided to buy some CDs of artists I've already enjoyed via MP3s. My targets: Coldplay's "Parachutes" and either of Ladytron's two albums.

So I visited the HMV at the bottom of the TD Bank tower, which is relatively well-stocked and a place where I regularly buy DVDs.

I managed to find a copy of Ladytron's "Light and Magic" as well as Coldplay's "Parachutes". Both were listed at $26.99 apiece. I couldn't quite believe it, and I actually double-checked the price of one of those CDs again to make sure I hadn't misread it. Nope, I hadn't been seeing things: it was $26.99.

I looked around. "Lilo and Stitch" on DVD was going for $23.99. In fact, most of the DVDs I saw ran a few dollars cheaper. I can't help but think that the music biz is doomed if they (or perhaps just that HMV) think that they can find many customer willing to pay more for a back-catalog music CD than a DVD that has a clear value-add to it.

In the end I walked out with Coldplay's more recent album at a much more reasonable $14.99, and the latest U2 double-album compilation -- including a bonus DVD -- for $23.99.
