At the end of work today Peter L. offered me a ride to the YMCA. He was going to go home himself, but he offered to drive me over to the Oakville Y, which I discovered last week is a stiff half-hour walk there (and back).
Since I wasn't heading home, Peter offered to show me where his new house was being built out in the ‘burbs nearby. Once we saw it, we got to talking, and then the thought came up: wouldn't it be a good idea to have a good long chat over a beer? I opted for a single pint of something and then heading over to the Y. Peter called his wife and let her know the situation, and she was fine with it. We drove over to the popular local watering hole, a place I have heard plenty of stories about from the other guys. It was a kind of "well then, we have to go there then, don't we?" So I had a pint and Peter had a half-pint. One pint didn't seem like enough so naturally I had another pint and Peter had another half. At the conclusion of this drink we both felt hungry, so we decided to order dinner. And another pint (half-pint for Peter). We talked about work, advancing our careers, music, family etc. By this time the Y was closed for the night, and even though Peter had been pacing himself well, I thought it best if he joined me in the hotel room for a while to chill out a bit.
The missing part of this story is that Peter's wife is very pregnant. For the past month he's been wearing a pager and cell-phone constantly in case he gets "the call". I didn't know that he'd forgotten to bring these things with him today.
So we get to hotel, and he puts in a call to his wife. Her water has broken! As Peter hurries out the door I hand him a bottle of coke to help keep him alert, knowing that he's likely to be up all night.
[All goes well. The following morning we hear that his wife has had another boy – their third – who is named Vincent Aristotle. At the office we all immediately wonder whether or not they'll try for a fourth in order to have a girl, though we hear back from Daisy, Peter's wife, that if he wants any more children, he will have to do it himself. ;-) ]
