Grave Thoughts
This morning I got my usual cup of tea and sat down to read my emails. Staring back at me was a picture of a gravestone, belonging to an Uncle of mine who died 85 years ago. This was from a contact I had made with a Liverpudlian contact I had made last week who was interested in the history of Allerton cemetery. I hadn't realized that he had a digital camera, and he had kindly sent me a couple of shots of the gravestone.

He also included a copy of the inscription on the headstone, which could just be made out in the close-up photo. It reads:

In Living Memory of Francis Edward
The Darling Child of Francis O. & Elizabeth A. Roberts
who fell asleep July 8th 1918, aged 23 months

At pretty much the same moment I was taking all of this in, I got a call from my Aunt in the U.K. – this was her brother's grave marker. I mentioned the photos and inscription to her and she was a bit surprised since this same grave location was supposed to contain the bodies of her parents and Aunt as well. I would have thought there would have been separate grave markers for them as well, but perhaps this single headstone is all there is. All fascinating stuff.

It was also sobering to look at this image on this, the day of my youngest daughter's second birthday. She is currently only one month older than Francis Edward. I don't even want to think about it...
