Ripped Through All of My Music CDs
Well, strictly speaking not all of them - just all of the popular/alternative/contemporary/whatever albums I have, plus all soundtracks, compilations and comedy CDs. This does not include our Jazz, Classical, Xmas or Children's CDs. Without these exceptions, the grand total is still a whopping 547 CDs.

This is a project I've been working on for the past few months. I like listening to tunes at work, and decided I wanted to have a "back-up" of all of the CDs I own, and also to have a list of what I can legitimately have the rights to rip and listen to however and whenever I want to. I ripped everything at the heist possible bit rate (320kps) using MusicMatch and managed to fit all of this onto 16 DVDs, making up roughly 75GB of MP3s - bigger by almost half of what can be fit onto the largest currently available iPod. I know that there are a few CDs missing from this list - at least one Krabba Kott compilation, probably a Miscellaneous S or two plus whatever is playing the car at the moment, but this list is pretty much definitive.

Not surprisingly, these ended up being the few oddballs (like a few of the CD Singles from the likes of Timezone and The Fall) and radio station-only pieces I got while I worked as Music Director at CFRC in the late 80s (such as the Stan Ridgway or Sinead O'Connor interview discs).

With this list I can now take an objective look at bands I seem to prefer, putting things into the categories of "Big Fan" (6 or more CDs) and "Definite Fan" (at least 5 CDs) I get the following breakdown:

• Genesis (the early years I hasten to point out!)

• Talking Heads
• The The
• Wire

For the most part, these are all bands/performers that I come back to and listen to time and time again (with the possible exception of Front Line Assembly - I think I went through a phase with them, though I still think they are among the best of their genre of music). If I had to make a Desert Island disc selection of tunes, I'd probably draw most of it from these artists.
