Had the Bartletts over for a steak dinner, and then we all headed over to see the Streetfest part of the Jazz Festival. Past experience has shown that the Thursday is the best day to go, as the crowds getting steadily bigger on subsequent days of the Festival.
We walked the couple of blocks to Woodbine, which had already been closed to vehicle traffic by the time we got there. We didn't get too far, our collective kids tiring quickly, especially since they all danced like mad. (Toronto crowds are maddeningly staid - Erika and the kids were pretty much the only ones who were bopping along with the music, though admittedly we only witness the early hours).
There were some really good R&B bands this year, along with some actual, real jazz bands. For the most part the "Jazz" quotient of the Beaches Jazz Festival is pretty low, the bulk usually made up of R&B bands, soft-to-squishy rock/fusion bands, a few big brass bands and with other styles, such as flamenco or Peruvian music, thrown in. Not much actual Jazz, but hey, it's free.
Lots of fun, though we only made it as far as the Nevada restaurant before we had to head back. Picked up a golf shirt for myself and a flashing saxophone pin for Annie, who loved her dazzling prize. Wish I had bought a CD of the Kevin Mark band, who gave the best performance I saw that evening.
We got home just in time -- it started to pour within minutes of us getting inside.
