Normally a trip to the local barber is not blog-worthy, but I decided to take the plunge and get something akin to a crew-cut, the first time I'll have had it so short since I was a teen. Basically, I like the look, and I am getting really sick of continually fussing my bed-head loving hair every morning.
So I went to the barber with my mop of hair and asked him for a really short cut that I didn't have to comb in the morning. Our barber is great and takes his job very seriously. He proceeded to scrunch up my bird's nest of hair and announced "You are lucky. You can do this. You don't have a weird-shaped head". He then proceeded to lop off most of my hair, and even without my glasses I liked the results as they were unfolding in the mirror opposite.
Hair has never been a huge deal for me. Sure I have the receding hairline typical of men my age, but so far I don't show any signs of going bald anytime, and I don't think I would care much if I did. I did have it cut really short at one time when I was running with my punk-music inspired friends when I was in high-school, which was followed by hippie shoulder-length hair. In truth it had less to do with my changing musical tastes (which by this time was more inclined to psychedelic music and new wave) than the fact that I was lazy about my hair.
Having said all of that, after looking at the finished results, I really ought to have had my hair shorn like this ages ago. The barber was joking with me that my wife would be all over me with this haircut. This is difficult at the moment since she is several thousands of miles away at the moment, but I know she'll like it too. And besides, I don't have a weird-shaped head. ;-)
