With some help from Graydon S. at work, am using command-line Knoppix to retrieve data from my notebook computer, which is not so much dead as sick, with an install of XP that refuses to boot. So am using Knoppix to get all of the data I want to save onto my 256MB USB key, which is then transferred to another machine which will eventually burn it to a disk.
Main thing I want to save off of the notebook are the digital camera pics. Think I already have everything except for the most recent pics, but am grabbing everything to be sure. Ditto with my Word files, and the stray bits and pieces I typically leave on my typically cluttered desktop.
When I am done, am seriously thinking of reformatting the machine into a Unix-only box. As long as I can connect it up to my home network and play the occasional DVD for the kids while traveling, there's little reason why not.
And maybe it won't crash as catastrophically anymore…
