Typical last-minute me, I have a conference I am heading to early next month in the States, and need to update my passport so that I can go. I know that I don't necessarily need one just to go to the States, but it can only make the process of going through customs that much easier.
Spent the morning filling out the necessary paperwork, emailing long-time friends who could vouch for me, getting my passport photo taken (no glasses, no smiling) at the local photo shop, then getting my dentist to sign as a guarantor (something I had already arranged beforehand). Then downtown to the passport office.
They have a good new procedure now where they have someone pre-screen your materials to ensure that you have everything you need. I did, and only waited about half an hour (about half the time I budgeted for) before I got to the teller who processed my application.
Paid the extra $10 in order to pick up the passport from their office (not sure why this costs extra, as I am saving them the postage), as I'll be in the area a day after it comes back, acting as a moderator at a locally-held conference.
