Took the day off, mainly in order to see Vanessa in a school play in the afternoon. She'd been working hard on memorizing her lines in French and really, really wanted us to come. How could I refuse? ;-)
It would be an exciting day for Annie as well, as she was all for having a picnic with her Dad, and was all jazzed about it. So I picked her up from the Healthy Earth pre-school shortly before noon, and we headed down to the beach. The weather could have been better -- in other words, warmer -- but we found a good spot sheltered from the wind and Annie directed me where she wanted the blanket put down, and took charge of how she wanted the food and drinks arranged. This was her picnic, and very much a big deal for her. So with the ocassional puzzled-looking or smiling jogger zipping by along the nearby boardwalk, Annie and I had a picnic, eating peanut butter and banana sandwiches and sipping juice from a box. And ocassionally throwing tidbits of bread to a particularly brave starling who repeatedly came by, who brazenness made Annie laugh.
Mid-afternoon we were at Vanessa's school for the performance. Her grade one class put on a string of 3 plays, all done in French. Vanessa's was in the final short play called "Pere Noel", where she played a doll excited at the prospect of being given to a child at Xmastime, and gets to meet Santa Claus. I recorded her exchange using movie mode on my digital camera, which lasted all of 24 seconds. It was short, but it was all well-pronounced, fluent French. She was very proud at the end of it all, especially at the fact that both of her parents were there.
Afterwards we let both girls play in the playground in front of the school. They then went to an early dinner at the nearby Licks, and I headed downtown to teach my Information Architecture class at the U. of T.
