Had my annual eye exam this afternoon. Made an appointment and took Annie with me, as Erika had mentioned that she seemed to be straining to look at things when close up.
Was wondering how the optometrist would check on Annie's eyes, as she does not fully know her letters yet (though I was proud when she said “E” immediately on seeing the first letter at the top of the projected chart). Turns out they use icons of familiar shapes, such as a telephone, horse, and car. Was surprised and disturbed when some of the smaller shapes on screen were things she couldn't get right even though she could correctly identify larger icons of the same things.
In the end it turned out that Annie has astigmatism – with almost exactly the same characteristics as my own. Isn't genetics wonderful? Luckily she is otherwise well-sighted, but she will most likely need glasses sometime in the near future.
This would explain why Annie isn't as keen to colour and draw like her big sister -- she probably can't see things as well close up. Still, the question is whether or not to get glasses for a 3 year old little girl who is very rambunctious.
Suddenly the annual allowance I get for prescription glasses from my health insurance at work doesn't seem like nearly enough.
