Breakfast with a Baby
Arranged to meet up with Kim S. along with her mate Jeff who brought along their 4-month old son Thomas (Tom) along. The plan was to have breakfast at a family-friendly place in the Beaches.

Kim and I go way back -- she co-wrote the book we did on creating Web pages back in '97, and before that we had both worked at Delrina in the early- to mid-90s, collaborating on a good chunk of what would become the Cyberjack Web browser manual. It turned out it had been a long time since Kim had come for a visit -- she had seen us last when we were still in the house on Dixon, which also meant she had never met Annie before. I found it interesting that Annie felt compelled to take her baby doll along with her for the trip, steadfastly carrying it on her shoulders -- which looked funny because the doll was floppy and stared back at me with an upside-down smile.

We made our way to Karas, which is easily the largest of the breakfast places in the Beaches, just west of Queen and Lee. Kim has actually been this way many times with baby before, and she lamented the demise of the Mio Frio juice and coffee bar across the street from our destination, in the building that formerly housed the TD bank. And she also knew of the Mom-and-Baby movie showings held regularly at the local Fox theatre.

We soon were at Karas chowing down happily on resolutely bad but a highly enjoyable breakfast. Despite being family-friendly, Karas doesn't offer much in the way of kid-oriented meals, and since the girls wanted different things, I ended up ordering two adult platters which ended up being largely a waste. Will have to remember that for next time.

Annie was a real wriggle-puss, but the adults managed to have a conversation, not surprisingly mainly on parenting. ;-) Kim clearly enjoys being a mom, and loves to spend the time with her little Tom.

Afterwards we stopped into the Dog Bakery to pick up a treat for Kim and Jeff's dog. It was the first time I had been in the shop since it opened. I remember seeing the same store when I was at a conference in Pasadena, and thinking that I would never see another one like it -- boy was I wrong. Picked up a token kitty treat for our cats.

Then off to the Kew Beach playground to let the girls get rid of some of that pent-up energy. And it was nice to see little Tom enjoy himself on the baby swing.

Afterwards we walked and chatted as we strolled along the boardwalk. Chilly, but calm waters. Vanessa insisted on picking up some beach glass which she proudly showed off to everyone.

They left us when we got to our home. A thoroughly, enjoyably lazy afternoon followed.
