My division at work decided to have their quarterly outing this time at an indoor Go Kart track in Etobicoke. It seemed like it would be a blast, so I joined in the event.
I can't remember definitively the last time I went Go Kart-ing, but it was likely many, many years ago at an open-air track that once existed on some farm property between Keswick and Sutton when I was a kid. Long enough ago when helmets were optional (if there were any to be had).
After seeing others go around the track a few times, I couldn't wait to get in one. We were warned several times no matter what not to put our hands out to the left hand side where the engine was, as it would be scorched in an instant. As it was I could feel my left side slowing cooking, as the radiant heat from the engine heated the seat I was in.
The first time round, one of the people on my team, Rhys G., managed to lap me three times. I swore next time round that that wouldn't happen again - and the next time he only got by me once. I played defensively from that point on and managed to pin him behind me for the rest of that round.
In the end I had to leave early in order to make it to teach my Information Architecture class that evening. My colleague stayed behind, and was on the team that put in the best times, coming away with the trophy.
Me (in Blue) About to Pass Rhys G. on the Track. Really...
