March 1st, 2011 Posted by admin Comments Off on Crescent Moon and Venus at Sunrise by The Beach
I had read in SkyNews that the Moon was going to be in the sky along with the planet Venus in this morning, and when I stepped out the front door, instead of heading straight to work I went down to the beach with my camera and took these shots.
The first shot, with the trees and the jogger in just the right place is my favourite of the bunch, and I pretty much knew it would be my picture of the day when I took it, but I kept walking closer to Beach, and the progression towards the water is what you see here.

Shot a picture of this little chickadee while out on a walk with the dog down by Woodbine Beach.
Love the details of the fine feathers on its back.

Another walk down by Woodbine Beach with the dog, and more pictures of birds.
Nice shot of a seagull silhouetted:

February 6th, 2011 Posted by admin Comments Off on Cardinals Down by Woodbine Beach
Went for a walk with YoBob down by Woodbine Park, and brought along some sunflower seeds to feed the birds down there. Last time I only managed to attract some Chickadees, but this time I caught the attention of a pair of cardinals, who posed for me while they assessing the risk of flying down to grab their share of seeds while a large predator was nearby with a funny-looking device pointed at them… 😉

January 29th, 2011 Posted by admin Comments Off on Anti-Government Egypt Protests
The “Arab Spring” continues. Was walking up to Dundas and Yonge, and saw that there was a protest in Dundas Square, this time by those seeking the end of the decrepit regime lead by Mubarak.
Best of luck to them!
Here are a couple of shots I managed to take from across the street:

January 10th, 2011 Posted by admin Comments Off on Crescent Moon and Jupiter
I read that there was going to be a near conjunction of the moon with Jupiter, so I dutifully set up my tripod on the back deck to shoot the following picture:
Crescent Moon and Jupiter
While it is hard to tell at thumbnail size, the “bump” that appears at 5 o’clock to Jupiter isn’t a lens echo, but one of that giant planet’s many moons. Am pleased with how this pic came out.

January 5th, 2011 Posted by admin Comments Off on American Kestrel Near Livingstone Park, Markham
Went for a walk over lunchtime with my camera and telephoto lens to Livingstone Park near where I work in Markham. On my way back I saw something perched on top of a street light pole, and realized it was a bird of prey. I took plenty of photos as a got closer, fearing he would fly away at any moment. As I got nearer though, it was clear that he wasn’t planning to budge from his perch on account of me way down below. So I snapped what I think are some good pics of him:
American Kestrel #1 (aka: What you lookin' at?)
American Kestrel #2
I had thought the bird was some sort of falcon, but when I looked him up the bird turned out to be an American Kestrel. Cool! 😉

December 21st, 2010 Posted by admin Comments Off on Lunar Eclipse Sequence
Spent a good chunk of the evening staying up on a crisp (but clear!) night taking pics of the progressing lunar eclipse.
Here’s a sequence of the photos I did that I stitched together in PhotoShop, and later posted to Wikimedia Commons:

Postscript: Someone on Wikimedia Commons did a good job of re-arranging my lunar eclipse sequence into a tidy rectangle:

Was down by the Distillery District, and while I took many shots, my favourite was this one of pigeon roosting for the night by the old Gooderham sign:

November 13th, 2010 Posted by admin Comments Off on The Vienna “Reserve Head”
My chief reason for wanting to go to the Kunsthistorisches Museum was to see its “reserve head“, one of only a few dozen in existence, dating to the Old Kingdom period of Ancient Egypt. They are roughly contemporary to the time of the pyramid builders, and are thought to depict the relatives of the pharaoh and some of his chief officials.
I first saw them at an exhibition that came to the Royal Ontario Museum over a decade ago, which was about the art from the Old Kingdom period. A subsequent visit several years later to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston where they have several of them renewed my interest in the subject.
The appeal should be fairly obvious, in that they while they are somewhat stylized, but they are life-like and seem to reflect distinct individuals, something that is virtually unique in sculpture from that period. There are also some mysteries that have not been fully or (to my mind) satisfactorily explained, as many of the heads show distinctive patterns of deliberate damage.
In one of the articles I read about the reserve heads, it said that there were few images of all of the sculptures from the sides and back, so where possible, I try to cover that angle as well.
The Kunischistoriche Museum’s reserve head was in a glass case set on a pedestal, allowing for a 360 degree view. Here are the shots I took:

This particular reserve head is cataloged as: ÄS 7787, was found at entrance of burial chamber, and is thought to date from the mid- to late-4th dynasty.
Have already posted these to Wikimedia Commons, and will add a picture to the reserve head article on Wikipedia.
