Insects on Purple Flowers

Went for another walk in Woodbine Park, and saw that a lot of purple flowers (a type of purple daisy?) was attracting all sorts of pollinating insects.

Caught a nice shot of a Monarch Butterfly sipping nectar from a purple flower. Along with the details of the butterfly I also love the bokeh on this one:

And here’s another of a bee on the same type of flower:

Hobomok Skipper Butterfly

Another walk with the dog looking for interesting critters to shoot with the camera. Saw this tiny butterfly, which was only just over a couple of centimeters long.

Hobomok Skipper Butterfly

Turns out to be a Hobomok Skipper. While looking it up I couldn’t make my mind up as to whether it was that or a Zabulon Skipper (gotta love the names in either case), but according to this, which says that the Zabulon Skipper is not found north of Pelee Island and that in “anywhere but extreme southwestern Ontario the Hobomok Skipper is unmistakable”. Well alright then, Hobomok Skipper it is then. 😉

Goldfinches and Blue Flowers

Took the dog out for a walk early this morning prior to our trip to see the girls up at Camp Couchiching, and I finally got some decent pics of some male goldfinches flitting about some blue flowers at Woodbine Park. Here are my pics from what I shot:

Small White Butterfly

Finally managed to get a decent picture of a Small White (Pieris rapae) Butterfly, better known to most people as the “Cabbage White”. The damned things keep flitting about, and are very sensitive to anyone near, so I feel lucky that I was able to catch one who held still on a nearby flower long enough for me to crouch down and take a shot with my telephoto lens.

Bullfrog on the Boardwalk

Saw this little Bullfrog leap onto the boardwalk at Woodbine Park. He stayed still long enough for me to take some shots, of which this one was the best:

More Mallard Ducklings

I predict that you are going to see many more pictures of the Mallard Ducklings that are calling the pond in Woodbine Park their home. There are clearly two small flocks of ducklings, each with its own mother protectively looking after them.

This was my favourite shot from the day, with a group of five ducklings heading one way while mother Mallard looks on. The white thing reflected in the water is the pond’s fountain.

Mallard Ducklings

Had a chance to walk the dog down by Woodbine Park again today, and finally got a good look at the Mallard ducklings that I have only seen from a distance before, occasionally peeking out from the bulrushes. The mother Mallard was keeping a close eye on her little flock, which included making sure a seagull didn’t get too close.

Here are the pics:

Fauna in Woodbine Park

Our dog YoBob is back from the cottage as the girls head to Camp Couchiching for the rest of the month, so he needed a walk. A good excuse for me to head to Woodbine Park, where I took pictures of the various fauna I saw down there on what was a hot day.

Here’s my favourite, of a Monarch Butterfly on an Echinacea Flower:

Trumpeter Swans in Woodbine Park

A pair of Trumpeter Swans have taken up temporary residence in the pond at Woodbine Park. Many pictures were taken — and here are some of them.

While I was taking the pictures, I was approached by a pair of teenage girls, and one of them asked whether these swans had walked here. Not sure where she got that idea, but I set her straight. 😉

Green Heron in a Tree at Woodbine Park

Saw this guy (a Green Heron) awkwardly perched in a tree down by Woodbine Park this morning.
